“Rain, rain go away ….” Not for this week’s featured Monday Maker. Rain was the inspiration to design and make something useful and sorely needed. Please meet Susan Mocarski, founder of Cleverhood, a small business in Providence, RI making a quality American product for all your outdoor rainy day needs.
The idea for a fashionably designed yet practical rain protector took hold during a wet Danish vacation in Copenhagen. The rain was incessant. Susan and her family were outdoors people and bikers. Not seeing Copenhagen during that small visit was not an option. They were forced to ride in the cold rain and all the while Susan was fantasizing about the perfect rain garment.
Back home in Providence the idea of a rain cape kept percolating. A rain cape that would keep the wearer and his/her stuff dry, would be stylish and have universal appeal. A graphic designer and teacher, Susan had the tools to create a garment that had flair, elegance and be totally utilitarian. She started the design process in 2010 and knew it was going to be made in America.
The start was a little rocky. The hood was complicated and the drape of the garment was specific. Details such as whether the hood fit over or under a helmet had to be addressed.
Prototypes were made, worn, tested and perfected for one year in order to offer better performance and style features.
Susan incorporated her new business under the name of Cleverhood.
The pattern perfected, it was time to locally source a manufacturer. Susan scoured the North East to find sewing shops that could sew a technical piece of apparel with seam sealing capability.
After months of factory visits and sample making she started to produce her garments in Newark, NJ.
After a manufacturing move to Delaware, then to California, the manufacturing of the Cleverhood finally returned closer to home in Fall River, MA.
Many of the components are locally sourced; reflective material from Cranston, RI, elastic from Central Falls, Velcro from New Hampshire, YKK waterproof zippers. Most of the fabrics are US made, some are imported.
The Cleverhood is designed to form a cover over your body, legs, bags and any other precious cargo you might want to carry, protecting you from the elements.
You will find special features and many cool details. It has elastic thumb loops that keep it secure in the front.
Velcro trim tabs for the sides.
All Cleverhoods have reflective properties for dark rainy nights.
The hood is designed to optimize peripheral vision and fit over any cap or under any bike helmet.
The Cleverhood customer is not necessarily a biker. It is a fashion garment for adventurers who brave the elements rain or shine.
For sailing enthusiasts, hikers, travelers or any outdoor sporting adventurers.
Or simply for that rainy day excursion in the city.
Finally, it is the perfect practical safety wear for the style-conscious cyclist.
In 2013, Cleverhood collaborated with the internationally known Martone Cycling Company. The partnership resulted in a very snazzy Electric Houndstooth cape. Using 3M phosphorescent technology the traditional houndstooth pattern is lit up
making the rider fully and dramatically visible.
In 2015, Cleverhood introduced a new garment to the collection. The Cleverhood Sweatshirt Cape, no ordinary “hoodie,” rather a carefully designed comfy and cozy outerwear garment for wherever life’s little daily adventures take you.
Intelligent and innovative design gives this garment international appeal. It is an item found in bike retail stores around the world, from the United Kingdom to Australia to Russia. Truth be told, if you like bikes, the outdoors and you don’t mind getting a little wet, you gotta have a Cleverhood.
The next, lighter weight, Cleverlight is on its way.
All New American is delighted to present another ‘Made in the USA’ company offering a quality American Made product. Since 2011, Cleverhood, a small business located in Providence, RI has been manufacturing both a performance and fashion cape designed for people who want to experience the rain, rather than just get wet.
