This week’s featured Monday Maker is quite straightforward in telling his story. All New American cannot say it any better.
“I built 1 for my nephew.
I built 5 for his teachers (for show and tell).
I built 10 for my first online store.
I am still building them today.”
Please meet Richard Upchurch, founder of Brand New Noise crafting in Brooklyn, NY.
It all started with a family vacation. Richard was surrounded by nieces and nephews and a whole lot of preprogramed noisy toys.
A musician himself, a simple idea occurred to him: What if there was a toy that allowed the player to make the sounds and explore their own voice?
So, in 2010, he used the electronics from a $2 toy and some wood scraps to build a simple voice recorder.
His 4-year-old nephew took the recorder to school for show-and-tell, and the device was a hit with the teachers.
The rest is history. Brand New Noise was founded in 2010.
A few years and 10,000 units later, Brand New Noise recording devices are sold at around 50 retailers all over the world, from Chicago to Spain.
It is quite the simplest and cleverest of gadgets. You press the red button to record and the black to play back. The nose acts as the microphone. The mouth is what controls the speed and pitch.
Upon playback, turning the knob allows the player to adjust the sound, resulting in quirky effects. Leaving messages can be quite fun.
Each small unit is made to fit in the palm of one hand.
“I wanted it to be small enough that any size hand could control it,” says Richard.
The voice recorders are made by hand in Richard’s 400 sq ft studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY.
