Many new American start-ups are incorporating a ‘do good’ element into their business plans. The desire to add a CAUSE is often inspired by a thoughtful upbringing. This is the case with this week’s All New American featured Monday Maker.
Please meet Brad Christmann, founder of Boldfoot Socks.
Brad graduated from UVA business school and went on to get his MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Having taken several entrepreneurial courses Brad was eager to get started creating his own business and quality American Made product. After all, this is the ultimate American dream and small business is the fuel that makes the American engine run.
The big question was what? That’s when his brother reminded Brad that at the age of 9, for some reason, he had wanted to make socks – not just any socks – but reversible socks and Brad experienced his ‘aha’ moment. Making socks at the age of 9 was out of the question. But, at the age of 29 the world was his oyster and America is the land of opportunity.
So socks became the business and Brad incorporated under the name of Boldfoot Socks.
Reversible socks were not going to take flight; however, socks with bold-designs, patriotic patterns, fun and colorful were worth taking a stab at.
With no design experience but being extremely adept at Photo Shop, Brad started designing super neat patterns, chunky lines, bold colors and strong logos.
At first, Brad wanted to go about starting his new venture the old fashioned way, without a Kickstarter. Because America’s manufacturing facilities have been decimated, those remaining are working mostly at maximum capacity. Their required runs were too much for Brad’s pocketbook and he experienced a serious reality check. Brad launched his Kickstarter in 2014 and set his amount at $10,000, the amount he needed to get started. Raising his funds, Brad went to work. He ended up collaborating with a welcoming sock mill in Pennsylvania.
A sock mill that was fortunate enough to be left standing.
A sock mill manufacturing quality American Made products.
Socks are endlessly creative and Boldfoot sets itself apart in the pattern department.
It’s a great way to freshen up the jeans look
or make a more dressy pair of pants look a little less formal.
Brad’s commitment to manufacturing in America is a by-product of his upbringing.
Inspiration and American pride were instilled early on by his grandfather a WWII, POW and Purple Heart veteran.
Naturally , making in America and making a quality American Made product that is pro-veteran is a strong component of the business. Boldfoot donates 5% of all profits to aid US Military veterans in need of jobs, housing and improved health.
Love the patriotic collection!
Socks are great gifts – especially socks with a story!
Boldfoot has a three month “Sock Insurance” program and recently launched a sock of the month club.
Wouldn’t you love to get a new pair of boldly designed socks every month!
All New American is delighted to present another ‘Made in the USA’ company. Since 2014, Boldfoot Socks, a small business located in Charlotte, NC has been manufacturing socks with bold designs and the brightest of colors. These quality American Made products, while being totally useful and fun, also help to support US Military veterans in need of jobs, housing and improved health. Brad can be proud to be part of the American community that is fuel for the engine that makes America great.
Thank you for giving us your time today. Have a great week. The Team.
