This week’s featured All New American Monday Maker is the story about an American small business that was born out of a need for something better, the need for a product that worked.
Please meet Bill Whyte founder of Badger Balm located in Gilsum, NH.
The journey started in 1994. Bill owned a small contracting business. New England is known for its harsh winters and New Hampshire is no exception. Many of the carpenters, including Bill, suffered from severe cracks in their hands after working in the cold. Not fun. Pretty painful stuff!
Unable to find a lotion, salve or balm to heal his damaged hands, Bill set out to create his own.
Bill’s first product, The Badger Balm was an instant hit amongst his peers and so another small American business, making a quality American Made product, was born. Bill founded Badger Balm in 1995.
Why Badger? Legend has it that Bill originally named his balm ‘Bear Paw’ but found out that the name already existed for another product. Turning his imagination inside out, he came up with the name ‘Badger’ for his balm – which is actually the best name as the badger is a healing totem.
The Badger team makes everything, except their mineral sunscreens, in their New Hampshire facility. Currently, the sunscreens are made in an FDA approved facility.
The company only uses quality ingredients, believing that botanicals grown in clean soil make for better and healthier products.
Their certified organic beeswax is sourced from the very best sources in Canada and India
and is used in the many quality American Made products the company offers.
The organic rose essential oil they use in all of their rose products is steam distilled in Bulgaria from rose petals picked the very same day. It takes 5 tons of rose petals to make one liter of this precious essential oil.
Their Damascus Rose Beauty Balm.
Team Badger is always formulating new products and their company’s mascot is ever present on Instagram touting one great balm or another.
Their organic, sustainable and clean formulation philosophy is evident in their life and work philosophy as well.
Meet two more Badgers, Jennifer and Brenna, with a new harvest from the organic garden.
The Badger kitchen chefs, Pam and Tal, serve up a healthful daily lunch.
They do this everyday!
The company has earned many distinctions and is able to proudly label their products USDA Organic.
Other labels include Non-GMO, Cruelty-Free and 100% Certified Natural.
Since 1994 the company has grown to over 100 products.
