This week’s featured Monday Maker had an illustrious career before venturing out on her own.
Initially inspired and encouraged by her textile artist Mom, Sherry Kleinman, Brit entered the reputable Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). After graduating with a degree in Industrial Design she worked at various projects and finally landed the prestigious position as head bag designer at the famous Jack Spade House. For the next five years, Brit continued to sharpen her craft and passion for working with leather.
All New American is proud to introduce Brit Kleinman.
In 2014, ready to launch her own brand, Brit opened a studio in Brooklyn and incorporated under the brand name AVO.
From her new studio in Brooklyn she launched her flagship collection of hand-painted leather rugs exploring how these materials could be used in a new way within the home.
Her initial design influence came from a trip to New Mexico where she began to research the motifs of Nomadic Plains Indians who decorated with brightly colored geometrical designs.
Endowed with an artistic eye and being an active observer, Brit sees design and inspiration everywhere.
Every day occurrences such as shadows
or tire tracks in the sand can find their way
into her haphazard designs on paper.
Brit starts her process by taking her many random designs, focusing on one and bringing it to life.
A finished design will follow the shapes and sizes of her full grain vegetable-tanned leather from American cows.
Using water-based dye, Brit hand-paints each of the rugs herself.
With a steady hand she follows her original vision.
Brit’s exquisite craft also explores the use of an age-old technique – blockpoint – on her raw cowhide rugs.
This triangle design
yields a beautiful leather rug, piece of art and quality American Made product.
Square herringbone patterns
are applied to the cowhide and will become an exquisite decorative pillow.
Each hide is unique, maintains its natural texture, darkens and caramelizes the more you use it and is really meant to be walked on – or laid upon.
Brit’s latest exploration into the many home applications of leather has taken her to leather wall tiles.
The leather cow hides are cut by hand
into squares or rectangles.
Color is applied
yielding beautiful leather tiles
waiting to be installed.
Brit’s work is exquisite in every way as she has brought her passion for materials and painting to life using leather as a canvas while making a quality American Made product. Her dynamic home collection offers the discerning customer a wide range of home decor pieces, including pillows,
furnishings – Brit upholstered these pieces for the Fritz Porter showroom in Charleston, SC –
Custom wall coverings – below done for the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, CA –
and, of course, floor coverings – where it all started.
Below, the floor coverings are beautifully displayed on the walls of the Belcampo restaurant in Los Angeles, CA.
All New American is delighted to present another ‘Made in the USA’ company offering a quality American Made product. Since 2014, AVO, a small business located in Brooklyn, NY has been artistically crafting hand-painted leather goods for the home emblazoned with bold geometric patterns inspired by the works of New Mexico’s Plains Indians. The flagship product is the full hide painted rug but the collection includes pillows, clutches, wall tiles and more. Brit can be proud to be part of the American community that is fuel for the engine that makes America great.
Thank you for giving us your time today. Have a great week. The Team.
